My Lord Marquess,
The Eastern Extension Telegraph Company
having under consideration the question of obtaining
new Offices in Hongkong, I recently instructed the
Company's Manager in China to approach the Governor
of Hongkong with a view to obtaining a suitable site
for the purpose on the Reclamation opposite to the
City Hall.
I also instructed him to suggest to the
Government that as the Company's relations with the
Imperial and Colonial Governments were now so intimate,
by reason, not only of the recent arrangements resulting
in the laying of the strategic Cables between Singapore,
Labuan and Hongkong (the importance of which at the
present moment is considerably accentuated) with the
consequent reduced rates for Government telegrams,
but
The Most Honorable
&C.
The Marquess of Ripon,

K.G.
&c.
Secretary of State for the Colonies.
